On my web site I will explain all you could ever want to know about postcards, at least I'll give it a shot, and maybe you would like to start collecting postcards. Postcards are History both past a present. Postcards are art both past and present. We can and do learn a lot from postcards. I am talking about postcards from all over the world.
We go on vacation, visit a city, a place, a museum, a hotel, you name it, and what is the one thing they all have in common? Postcards. We buy postcards to send to our friends, show people that we were there or we stayed there or we ate there. Weeks or years later when we find these postcards in a drawer or a shoe box do you take them and sit down and read them, remember the memories? You should.
Just quick example would be if you have or come across a postcard that shows the World Trade Center. We remember that terrible event on 9-11. If you have children or grand children 11 year old or younger, they don't remember the World Trade Center and 9-11. They only hear what is told to them in books or on the TV. A postcard shows them that they were there, you were there, you saw them, you took pictures of them, you remember how gigantic they were. Postcards show they were there.
First Day of Issue Covers (FDC). Every stamp has a birth date the first day it was released to the public. That Birthday is call a stamp's First Day of Issue. The cancel may also say First Day of Issue, it should be printed on the front of the cover, some where. In Canada the birth date of a Canadian stamp is called Day of Issue or Jour D'É Mission, First Day of Issue. Stamps from every country in the world have a First Day of Issue. Stamps honor People, Places , things, events, holiday and countless other things. When Prince Charles and Lady Di got married in 1981, that generated stamps and FDC around the world. I will show you some here. I will tell you how you can get you own FDC. I will explain about the cachets on the FDC. Cachets? Cachets are the art work on FDC. More about that in due time.
